Mechanical Traction

Restore Alignment. Relieve Pain. Regain Movement.

Mechanical traction is a therapeutic technique used in physical therapy and orthopedics that applies a controlled, mechanical force to stretch and mobilize the spine (neck and back). This is usually done using a traction machine or device that gently pulls on the body part to relieve pressure and improve alignment.

Goals and Effects of Mechanical Traction

  • Decrease pressure on spinal discs and nerves

  • Reduce joint compression

  • Improve spinal alignment

  • Promote relaxation and reduce muscle guarding

  • Increase intervertebral space

  • Facilitate movement of synovial fluid and nutrients into the disc

Conditions Treated with Mechanical Traction

Spinal Conditions:

  • Herniated or Bulging Discs

  • Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)

  • Radiculopathy (e.g., cervical or lumbar)

  • Sciatica

  • Facet Joint Dysfunction

  • Foraminal Stenosis

  • Spondylosis or Osteoarthritis of the Spine

  • Cervical headaches (related to nerve root compression or joint dysfunction)

  • Postural dysfunction

  • Hypomobility of the spine

Benefits of Mechanical Traction Therapy

(Especially for spinal pain & disc-related conditions)

1. Spinal Decompression

Mechanical traction gently stretches the spine, creating space between the vertebrae.
This helps relieve pressure on compressed nerves and bulging or herniated discs.

2. Pain Relief

By reducing nerve compression and improving joint spacing, traction often provides immediate relief for:

  • Low back pain

  • Sciatica

  • Neck pain

  • Pinched nerves

3. Improved Mobility

As tension and pressure decrease, patients often notice better flexibility and range of motion, especially in the neck and low back.

4. Non-Invasive Option

Traction is a drug-free, surgery-free alternative for managing chronic spine conditions — great for patients looking for conservative care options.

5. Enhanced Healing Environment

By improving blood flow and reducing pressure on affected structures, traction helps your body create the right conditions to heal naturally.

6. Supports Other Therapies

Mechanical traction pairs well with other treatments like manual therapy and exercise — making your overall recovery plan more effective.

Contraindications
(When Not to Use)

  • Spinal fractures

  • Severe osteoporosis

  • Spinal infections or tumors

  • Uncontrolled hypertension (especially with cervical traction)

  • Acute trauma or inflammation

  • Pregnancy (relative contraindication for lumbar traction)

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (especially upper cervical instability)
